Durango to Silverton

An important part of Durango history, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway arrived in Durango in the fall of 1881. The rail line to Silverton was amazingly completed in only nine months! By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were complete, and the train began transporting both freight and passengers. Even though the Durango-Silverton Railroad was originally constructed to haul silver and gold ore, passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious
Gorgeous views along the train ride.
This engine was along side ours and it is one that sprays the track when the weather is really dry.

The railroad runs 45 miles from the Durango yard to Silverton, crossing the Animas River five times throughout the trip.
