Zapata Falls, CO

The trail is a moderate 0.5 mile uphill hike to the base of the creek. Wading through the creek is often necessary to reach the waterfall.

Zapata Falls is a 40 foot tall waterfall located inside a steep rock crevasse near the base of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Zapata Falls is located approximately five miles south of the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Two million years ago glacial activities were sculpting the Sangre de Cristos. The waterfall flows through a rock dike left by a retreating glacier. As the glacier melted away, a large lake of meltwater built up behind the dike.

Eventually, the water found a weak spot in the dike and began working and eroding its' way through.
